Frank Metz Landscape Artist
Frank Metz
"The artist's handling of paint as color, paint even as light, is exemplary, as in Near Stonington (1982), a grassy beach with brightly articulated rocks in the foreground, and pines and low-lying mountains of purple and blue in the background. Metz's forte, though, is skies; like some modern Tiepolo, he graces the heavens not only with the customary blues and pinks and evanescent whites but with mauves and peaches, lemon yellows and even ochres...Metz is a fifty-eight year-old near master who is a sure bet."
-Gerrit Henry, ARTnews, April 1984
Frank Metz has devoted his artistic career to creating masterful oils of solitary coastal scenes, many from the Maine islands and coast. Frank's artistic universe is made up of the most elemental basics: rocks, trees, sky, and water. Though human architecture may be present, people are generally absent. According to one critic, "soft lavenders, earthy greens, grey-blues, off-pinks, muted yellows". His palette and technique evoke a deep serenity.
